With her extensive experience in both legal and business realms.Amira has carved a unique path for herself and has much wisdom to share. Join us as we uncover the secrets to her success and unravel the multifaceted world of entrepreneurship through her eyes.
Thank you for joining us today, Amira. We are excited to have you here, and our readers are eager to get to know you better. To provide some context to our interview, could you please introduce yourself and share some background details about your journey?
Amira: Sure, I would be happy to! My name is Amira Irfan, and I am the business lawyer, entrepreneur and coach behind A Self Guru, an online company dedicated to helping entrepreneurs in making money online and legally protecting their businesses.
We have had the honor of helping over 50,000 entrepreneurs feel safe and protected about their businesses while maintaining a 5-star customer rating. It gives me great satisfaction to provide entrepreneurs with the information and resources they need to confidently grow their businesses.
My journey has been quite a roller coaster ride, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. After watching my own dad’s business get sued for $50,000 for a legal mistake that could have been avoided with a contract in place, I decided to become a business lawyer.
I found that many entrepreneurs make similar mistakes, and that is why I strive to help business owners protect their dreams by providing them with the legal resources they need. Being an entrepreneur myself, I understand how important it is to have a sound legal foundation for your business.
Every day I am grateful for the opportunity to provide valuable guidance and knowledge to all my readers, helping them make smart decisions that will benefit their businesses long-term.
And with A Self Guru, I’m doing just that! I’m excited to be here today and share a bit more of my story with your readers! Thank you so much for having me.

It’s a resource for entrepreneurs to get personalized help and advice from me as a mentor, so they can move forward with confidence in their business pursuits without making costly legal mistakes.

4. What challenges did you face when establishing A Self Guru, and how did you overcome them?
Because I started my online business while working full-time as a lawyer, my biggest challenge was finding the time to work on my business.
Time management was essential, and I had to make sure that I stayed organized with the tasks I had to do. To ensure this, I kept a detailed list of all the tasks I had to do each day and would set aside specific times for working on my business.
So during the day, I worked full-time as a lawyer and at nights and weekends, I dedicated myself fully to growing my business. It was definitely not easy because I didn’t have any work-life balance during the first year, so I often experienced burnout.
In addition, since I was doing this while also taking care of a family and maintaining other commitments, it was important to remember why I wanted to start my own business in the first place and stay motivated. This helped me keep going even when things were tough.
Lastly, I reached out to other entrepreneurs for advice and support, which was also invaluable during the early stages of setting up A Self Guru. Overall, it was a challenging yet rewarding process that enabled me to achieve my goals.
5. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are considering starting their own businesses?
My advice for anyone wanting to start their own business is to plan and prepare as much as possible beforehand.
Doing research on the industry, the target audience, and other similar businesses will help you understand what needs to be done and how to move forward.
Additionally, it’s essential to create a business plan that outlines the goals you want to achieve, as well as strategies for reaching those goals. It’s also important to have realistic expectations regarding the time and effort needed for launching an online business successfully.
Lastly, it is helpful to find support and guidance from other successful entrepreneurs who can provide mentorship and advice throughout the process.
Personally, I invested a lot in online courses from successful entrepreneurs so I could speed up the learning process and get my business off the ground quickly.
Ultimately, by having a plan and support system such as our Facebook group here, you will be much better equipped to tackle any obstacles that come your way.
6. In your opinion, what are the essential skills and qualities required to be a successful entrepreneur?
Well, the essential skills and qualities required to be a successful entrepreneur are creativity, innovation, problem-solving ability, passion for your venture, risk-taking ability, resilience in the face of failure, strong communication abilities, and excellent customer service.
Additionally, it is important to have a well-defined vision of what you want to achieve and the ability to build and lead a team to bring that vision to life.
Lastly, you need to be able to network and collaborate with the right people in order to reach your goals. With these skills and qualities, any aspiring entrepreneur can have the potential for success.
7. As a business lawyer, what are some legal considerations entrepreneurs should keep in mind when starting and growing their businesses?
When starting and growing their businesses, entrepreneurs need to remember that legal is the glue that holds your business together.
Therefore, it’s really important to have a strong legal foundation for your business because if things go wrong, you’ll need the right procedures and paperwork in place to protect your business.
Here are some legal considerations entrepreneurs should keep in mind:
1. Make sure your website is legally compliant. That means posting a privacy policy, Disclaimer, and Terms and Conditions at the very least. You also need to ensure compliance with the accessibility laws out there.
2. Have the proper permits and licenses required by the state or local government for your type of business.
2. Register your business with the IRS and comply with all relevant federal, state, and local taxes.
3. Make sure your business is properly insured and protected from potential liabilities.
4. Have written contracts with all contractors, customers, and employees that clearly outline the terms of the deal and how disputes will be resolved.
5. Research any relevant industry-specific regulations or laws that could impact your operations.
6. Keep records and financial statements to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations.
7. Have an attorney review any contracts or business deals that could impact your company’s operations.
8. Consider protecting intellectual property rights, such as copyrights, trademarks, or patents, if applicable.
9. Limit your personal legal liability by forming a proper entity for your business such as a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and discuss this with a lawyer to make sure you are filing the paperwork correctly.
And more!
These are just some of the key legal considerations entrepreneurs should take into account when starting and growing their businesses.
It is always best to consult with an experienced business lawyer (you can book a call with me here) before making any decisions that could have long-term legal implications.
By taking the time to understand the legal landscape, entrepreneurs can ensure that their businesses are in compliance and protected from potential liability.
8. What are your future plans and goals for A Self Guru?
When it comes to growing A Self Guru, I have always listened to my customers and target audience to see what they need help with specifically.
That’s how I was able to create 20+ legal templates to solve their legal issues and offer the important services all entrepreneurs need.
So going forward, my plan will be to continue listening and responding to the needs of my customers. For example, I will be launching a new legal bundle of templates for podcasters to protect their podcast business soon.
I want to continue building out A Self Guru so that entrepreneurs have access to all the legal and business services they need. I also plan on launching a course focused on helping people start their own businesses, as well as a monthly membership area where entrepreneurs can connect with other like-minded individuals.
9. How do you foster a positive and productive work culture within your team at A Self Guru?
I believe it all starts with your leadership style and providing yourself as an example for your team to look up to. Leading by example and having a positive attitude is essential to fostering a productive work culture.
At A Self Guru, we believe in setting clear goals and expectations for our employees that are both attainable and inspiring. We also strive to create an environment of open communication and collaboration where everyone feels included, valued, and appreciated.
Lastly, we make sure to recognize and reward our team members for their contributions, as this can help to create an atmosphere where everyone is motivated and excited to do their best work. By working together as a cohesive unit, we are able to achieve greater success!
10. Are there any specific strategies or techniques you use to manage stress and maintain work-life balance?
Because I failed to maintain a work-life balance in my first year of business, it resulted in serious health consequences for me where I ended up having an unexpected surgery.
This is because I worked 16 hours a day and had no time off on the weekends, so obviously this kind of workaholic attitude was not sustainable for the long term.
I have now implemented the following strategies to manage stress and maintain work-life balance:
1. I make sure to take breaks during work hours and take regular vacations to help me relax and rejuvenate.
2. I use mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, or listening to music in order to stay present in the moment.
3. I prioritize my mental and physical health by exercising, eating healthy foods, and getting plenty of sleep.
4. I create boundaries between my work-life and personal life to ensure that I’m not working all the time and actually getting some leisure time in-between projects.
5. I have a good support network around me that I can turn to when I need help or just want to take a break from work.
These strategies have helped me immensely in managing my stress and creating a good balance between work and life.
11. As a business lawyer, have you noticed any common legal mistakes that entrepreneurs often make, and how can they be avoided?
This is a question I get all the time! That’s why I created this helpful video on my YouTube channel where I walk you through the 13 most costly legal mistakes to avoid in your business.
But in a nutshell, here are some of the common legal mistakes entrepreneurs make and how to avoid them:
1. Not knowing their legal obligations: Many entrepreneurs don’t know the laws and regulations governing their business, then they are caught off guard when they get into trouble. To avoid this, research your industry before you start to make sure you understand the relevant laws and regulations.
2. Not making their website legally compliant: If you have a website, you are legally required to post a proper Privacy Policy on it. Then if you want to limit your legal liability for the content you publish, then you should also post a disclaimer. If you want to further protect your intellectual property or avoid disputes with your customers, then you should post clear Terms and Conditions before you start selling any products or services.
2. Hiring without an employment agreement: Don’t hire any employees without a signed employment agreement that outlines the terms of their employment. Same rule applies to independent contractors that you hire in your business. You need to make sure you have a proper Freelance Contract in place with them.
3. Not forming your business entity correctly: Many entrepreneurs think they can file the paperwork for their business themselves, but if you do it wrong it could cost you dearly. Make sure to hire a qualified attorney who understands how to set up and maintain your company’s legal structure properly.
4. Not protecting your intellectual property: A lot of entrepreneurs don’t realize that their ideas and products are valuable assets that need to be protected. Make sure you have the right copyrights, trademarks, and patents in place for your business.
5. Failing to review and sign contracts correctly: Whenever entering into a contract with another business or individual, make sure you read it thoroughly and even have a lawyer review the contract before you sign your rights away. This will give you the legal protection you need should something go wrong.
By avoiding these common mistakes, entrepreneurs can help protect themselves from costly legal problems down the road. Knowing your obligations upfront and maintaining your company in a compliant manner is key to success!
12. What role do you believe continuous learning and personal development play in the success of an entrepreneur?
I believe that entrepreneurship is the best form of personal development, and I always say this, “you never graduate as an entrepreneur!”
You are constantly learning, growing and adapting along the way. Continuous learning and personal development are key components of success for entrepreneurs.
By continuously learning new skills, you can stay competitive in a rapidly changing world and remain relevant to your clients and customers.
Personal development also helps keep you motivated, inspired, and creative. It’s important for entrepreneurs to dedicate time to not just working on their business, but also on themselves.
This will help you create better products or services for your customers, and ultimately make smarter decisions as a business leader.
It’s also important to allocate some time every day to stay informed about new industry trends and regulations so that you can be proactive in responding to changes.
13. How do you identify and evaluate new opportunities for growth and expansion for A Self Guru?
At A Self Guru, we use a combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods to identify new opportunities for growth and expansion.
We use data such as customer surveys, website traffic analysis, market research, and analytics tools to determine areas where the company can focus its efforts.
Additionally, we look at current trends in the industry and evaluate what our competitors are doing to ensure that we are staying competitive. By using both quantitative and qualitative methods, we can identify new opportunities for growth that are best suited to our organization and capitalize on them in order to remain successful.
We also recognize the importance of innovation when it comes to identifying new opportunities for growth and expansion. We continuously look for innovative ways to expand our services, create new products or services, or enter new markets.
Besides, We are also focused on finding partnerships and opportunities for collaboration that can help us reach our goals. By putting in the effort to research all these areas, we can ensure that A Self Guru is always taking advantage of the latest opportunities available.
14. Can you share some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout your entrepreneurial journey?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned throughout my entrepreneurial journey is that success is not a destination, but an ever-evolving process.
It’s important to focus on long-term goals while also adapting and reacting quickly to changing circumstances.
Another lesson I’ve learned is that you have to be willing to take risks if you want to achieve your goals. Taking risks can be scary, but it’s essential if you want to reach the next level.
Lastly, I’ve learned that collaboration and team spirit are incredibly important in business. If you’re able to build a strong team with complementary skill sets and a shared vision, amazing things can happen.
15. What are your thoughts on the importance of networking and building professional relationships in the business world?
I believe networking and building professional relationships in the business world are essential to your success as an entrepreneur. This is one of the big reasons why I was able to make $210,000 in my first year of business while working full-time as a lawyer.
I networked with fellow bloggers and entrepreneurs for support, affiliate marketing, freebie exchanges, and advice.
I also built relationships with potential clients by attending meetups, conferences, and other industry events. It was through my network of supportive contacts that I was able to really grow my business and gain visibility in the online business world.
By networking and building relationships with people in the same field as you, it can help open doors to opportunities you may never even have thought about. It also gives you the chance to get feedback from experienced professionals who are in the same industry as you.
Most entrepreneurs don’t realize the power of networking. Networking is not just about making contacts and getting referrals, it’s also about creating relationships with people who can offer support, advice, resources, and opportunities.
When you build professional relationships in the business world, you have access to an entire network of people who can help you succeed.
16. Finally, what does success mean to you personally, and how do you measure it in your entrepreneurial endeavors?
Another great question! Success to me means making an impact in the world that I’m proud of. It’s not just about money, or fame, but feeling like I’m making a real contribution to something greater than myself.
For me, measuring success is all about looking at my progress – are steps being taken in the right direction? Are my ideas and goals realistic and achievable? Am I working with people who share my values and vision? If the answer is yes, then I’m on the right track.
Success is a journey, not a destination – I’m constantly striving to learn and grow as an entrepreneur. That’s where true success lies.
Ultimately, what matters most to me is that I’m making something meaningful – something that will create lasting value for myself and others.
