Say today while walking into your workplace you revert a “Thank you” with a smile to the security guard who opens the gate for you or send a sweet thank you note for that special friend at your work who surprises you with home-cooked meals to make you feel at home, are few named examples which showcases what Gratitude really means or as one must say are the small ways or actions where it begins. In today’s complicated and fast pacing world, this word and its meaning has lost its valour.
For a peaceful and positive life, it is essential for one to understand the meaning of Gratitude as well as try to incorporate it in our day to day living. Know it or not, even a small act of gratitude can really change one’s life for the best. Before trying to dig deep into the world of Gratitude, let’s look at its literature meaning. The word gratitude was derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, gratefulness or thankfulness.
Gratitude is an Attitude
Now by definition, Gratitude is attitude which reflects thankfulness which an individual has received in tangible or intangible form. In other words, Gratitude is nothing other than perspective of goodness in one’s life. Hence what is the harm in doing some good towards ourselves by incorporating this attitude of being thankful into our life’s?
Not only does it brings in a sense of thankfulness but also helps us to connect to something superior be it deeper connection with our fellow humans, Nature, The Universe as a whole or a higher power. With gratitude, we come to point to realise the goodness around us is partially outside themselves and partially part of a large complexity of events.
Having said it all, you must be wondering it looks good in words, does it really need to be practiced?
As you read through you be able to understand it better as to why must one practice Gratitude?
In today’s fast pacing world, mental health of individuals has become an alarming concern. This has brought in the need for research in the mental health field, wherein they have come across the fact that gratitude is strongly as well as consistently associated with one’s greater well being and inner happiness.
Since it is associated with feeling of positivity, it helps people enhance their overall health as well as reduce symptoms of stress. The appreciation of good experiences in life helps in creation of stronger foundation of relationships, hence it is necessary to practice Gratitude.
Gratitude is the daily wake up call for what is actually important in our life. With cultivation of appreciation, one tends to stray away from negativity and understand the true value of challenges which life throws our way every now and then. Most importantly Gratitude help us be more grateful and thankful of the life we have and those surrounded by us. Hence, in short, the attitude of thankfulness is a must written prescription for a healthy life.
Now that you have decided to practice it, question arises how would you practice it or other words how should one express gratitude?
Studies have shown that daily practice of Gratitude in ones life, helps one attenuate a deeper sense of well-being.
Here are few pointers how you can be able to do so in your daily routine life.
- Wake up in the morning and jot down a list of things that you feel you are grateful for
- Make sure to say a “Thank You” each and every time someone does something for you
- Create a journal to keep tracks of gratefulness in your life
- Mediate and connect with yourself and your body to practice gratitude towards one’s self.
- Keep weekly reviews with your self to memorize the happy experiences of your life that occurred with you over the week.
- Last but not the least remind yourself each day to keep up the sense of Gratitude in life
As I may conclude, If preached rightfully, you might end up saying “Thank You” more often and feeling happy every time to do so. So what are waiting for, run to your family and let them know how thankful you are to have them!!
